Jade

I’m very happy to highlight Arlington piano teacher Jade Nguyen in today’s teacher showcase! Jade began her own musical instruction at the young age of 4. While growing up she competed in many piano competitions and earned superior ratings for 6 years in a row! She is extremely dedicated to education and holds a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Darden College. She has all kinds of experience in the education/ teaching field, including 2 years of service with Americorps (the Peace Corp here in the US), where she worked with at-risk youth. I’m thrilled to have Jade as a part of the Winterhalter Music team. Below are her answers to my interview questions with her.

1. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?

No other subject can impact the way music can.

2. What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching is when my students say, “…mom/dad look what I learned today!” As a teacher, I feel most accomplished when my students are proud of what they’ve learned.

3. Describe your teaching style.

My teaching style changes with the student. At the end of the day, I want my students to not only enjoy music, but to also have goals they want to reach. Freedom, focus and fun.

4. What is your favorite music to play and listen to?

I grew up competing with classical – disliked it. Now I love it. I was too young to understand its power and influence.

5. What are some fun facts that people might not know about you?

I served in the domestic peace corps for two years; I am a newlywed (9-22-12); I have a slight obsession with paper crafts, handwriting and hair; we have televisions, but don’t pay for cable (HULU is the best), and I clean/organize for fun. =)
