Winterhalter Music Teacher Showcase: Getting to Know Joyce Lim

by Cassie Winterhalter on March 7, 2013

Joyce

For today’s teacher showcase, it’s my honor to showcase Joyce Lim. Joyce originally began teaching piano with Winterhalter Music back in the Spring of 2010. At the time she was a college student finishing up her degree at the University of Maryland.

When I first interviewed Joyce for the position, she told me about her extremely strict musical upbringing. Her family sat her down at the piano from the time she could sit up, and lessons were not fun. She had no say in the music she learned and had such high pressure to perform that, sadly, she grew to hate the piano and hate music.

After taking a few years off from playing, she wanted to rekindle the love of music she knew still remained in her heart, so she thought she’d give teaching lessons a try. While today Joyce has a day job that’s non-music related, she tells me continually how much she adores teaching. I’m so happy to have her a part of our team, so she can share her rediscovered love of music and her talent for teaching with our students.

The following is my interview with Joyce:

1. What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching is helping someone else discover the joy of music!

2. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?

I originally wanted to become a music teacher just to add some additional income to my measly college pay stub, honestly. But it became something much, much more. I never thought that I could become so passionate about teaching, but it has really become such an important part of my life that I could not give it up, even though I have graduated and moved on to other projects. I hope that teaching will always be a big part of my life.

3. What do you hope your students will get out of taking lessons from you?

I hope that they will never stop loving to learn about things! I like to emphasize with them that the values of hard work, practice, and dedication to piano are all tools that they can use in anything else in life that they want to become better at. I hope that they will never stop asking questions! I also hope that they are able to think about music from a musician’s perspective.

4. What is your favorite music to play and listen to?

Lately I have had a growing interest in electronic dance music, but I will never lose my love for hip hop from the early 1990’s, jazz, and classical music. Chances are that you can catch me listening to a piece from only one of these four genres throughout the week. I should branch out more!

5. What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to play piano whenever I can; there is always more to learn! I also am an avid reader and cyclist, but not at the same time! I mostly read non-fiction. I also enjoy taking advantage of Washington D.C.’s national art galleries. I am very much into healthy eating as well and love to cook meals for my friends. I also really enjoy watching competitive sports! I am a Washington Redskins fan and a Washington Capitals fan.

Joyce is currently accepting new students. Contact us if you’d like more information about starting lessons with her. You can also learn more about Joyce in her bio.
