It’s my great pleasure to introduce you to one of Winterhalter Music’s newest teachers, Laura Peacock! Laura recently joined our fabulous team as a piano and voice teacher. Her warm, friendly personality coupled with her infectious love of music brings out the creative side of even our most shy student.
Originally from Georgia, Laura is relatively new to the DC area. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in vocal performance and has extensive teaching experience (piano and voice) and performing experience (opera and musical theater). Read my interview with Laura below to learn more about her teaching style and philosophy.
1. What do you hope your students will get out of taking lessons from you?
I hope my students will gain musical knowledge they can take with them the rest of their lives! I want each student to feel as though they are progressing technically, but also creatively. I want each student to be empowered by their musical ability, and use it to not only play their favorite classical or pop tunes, but to express themselves creatively and have a deeper understanding of the art.
2. Describe your teaching style.
I try to make every lesson fun! I think it’s important to balance technique with creativity so I encourage my students to maintain classical pieces and theory as well as composition and improvisation. I also love working on writing songs as well!
3. How do you motivate your students?
I try to motivate with a positive attitude! It’s important that every student feels good about the progress they are making. I also try to encourage students by showing them how they can use the material they are learning now toward future pieces.
4. What is your favorite music to play and listen to?
I like all kinds of music! I thoroughly enjoy opera music, but I also love to jam out to my favorite country tunes. My favorite opera is Don Pasquale by Donizetti and La Boheme by Puccini. I love to play classic literature on the piano, but I also like to incorporate my theory training to pick up my favorite pop songs.
5. What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I like to spend time with friends and enjoying the great outdoors! I love water sports, so I will find any excuse to spend time on the water. I grew up water skiing with my family, so it’s definitely one of my favorite things.
