Ring in the New Year with Music Lesson Resolutions

by Cassie Winterhalter on January 3, 2013

Happy New Year! I hope your 2013 is off to a great start. I am looking forward to continuing to share the love of music with our wonderful students. On a personal note, I am also looking forward to getting married this summer. 🙂

The New Year can be a time for new beginnings, and resolutions to improve. Personally, though, I know I don’t always follow through with my resolutions unless I have a specific plan to make them stick!

I hope you’ll take some time this New Year’s to talk with your children about their musical goals. To help, here are some questions you could consider together:

  • Are there specific pieces or styles of music you’d like to learn?
  • Would you like to learn a new instrument?
  • Where and when would you like to perform?
  • Which performances do you want to attend?
  • Would you like to focus more on composing, improvising, theory, ear training, or music history in lessons?
  • Would you like to practice more and practice smarter? (If so, check out this blog post for specific suggestions!)

Now that you’ve brainstormed, it’s time to come up with a plan to make these music lesson resolutions happen:

  1. Talk to your teacher! Send them an email or talk to them at the next lesson. They can answer questions and help you feel supported and accountable.
  2. Let us know if you want to learn a new instrument.
  3. Add your resolutions to your calendar.

If you’d like to attend more performances, look up the schedules of various music venues in the area, choose some performances, buy tickets, and go.

If you want to practice more, schedule it in! Be sure to add a follow-up date to your calendar when you’re going to check in with your progress to your goals.

Hold yourself accountable. Tell someone about your plans and then have them check back in with you at a later date. Most people are more likely to achieve goals if they are held accountable to others besides themselves.

The possibilities are endless! If you decide what you want to do and then take action to make it happen, I guarantee 2013 will be a phenomenal year for you. You will grow musically in ways you never could have imagined.

Now I want to hear from you… what are your musical New Year’s resolutions for 2013? How are you going to make them a reality? Tell us in the comments below.
