About a month ago I brought on a new voice and beginning piano teacher, Jacqueline Ecle, who goes by Jackie! Currently Jackie is a senior at Catholic University pursuing her degree in music education (general/ choral music). In addition to teaching Winterhalter Music students, Jackie student teaches in Rockville and Fairfax and is completing her coursework at CUA. She has so much passion for music and teaching, it’s contagious! She thinks of music lessons as a way to build confidence in her students. I know from my experience that music lessons can be a major confidence builder. My interview with Jackie is included below:
1. What is your favorite thing about teaching?
My favorite thing about teaching is when the lightbulb goes off in a student’s mind after you explain something new to them or when they really understand something on another level. If a student is not understanding something, it is a good and important challenge for the teacher to find other ways to explain a concept because not everyone learns the same way.
2. Describe your teaching style.
My teaching style is such that I always start where the student is in terms of their development. I never would want to push them to do something that they are not ready for, and always try to present new material in an accessible and non-intimidating way.
I also like to get to know my students individually – their interests, hobbies, etc – because that helps me to understand how to help them learn better and love their own favorite type of music more.
3. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?
I had wonderful music teachers in high school who really inspired me through choral music, and I knew since then that I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life to giving future generations of students the same inspiration.
4. What is your favorite music to sing and listen to?
I LOVE listening to jazz/big band music. I’m also really starting to develop a taste for opera. But since I’m primarily a singer, I’m trying to expand my horizons to include instrumental/orchestral music, too.
5. What are some fun facts that people might not know about you?
I have lived in many places! I was born in the Philippines, grew up in South Texas, lived in New Jersey randomly, am earning my undergrad in DC, and my family currently lives in Arizona.
Thanks so much for reading! You can find out more information about Jackie in her bio.
