I’m so excited to introduce you to my newest teacher, Joe Benny! Joe is originally from Frederick, MD, but lives in the DC area now. He’s primarily a drummer, but can play and teach guitar and piano as well. Just like me, he was hooked on music and has never looked back since he got his first taste of playing while growing up. He’s played drums in a number of bands over the years, but took his passion for music a step further by attending and graduating from the Omega Studios’ School of Applied Recording Arts and Sciences. There he learned recording engineering and audio production. Today in addition to teaching, Joe produces, edits, and mixes chart topping modern dance music. Isn’t that cool?! My interview with Joe is below:
1. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?
I decided to start teaching because I would love to share my experiences with others and keep music alive.
2. Describe your teaching style.
I have a very open-minded teaching style. I like to cover the fundamentals of the instrument and then cater to the preference of the student while introducing them to new techniques and styles of playing.
3. How do you motivate your students?
I like to motivate by example and positive reinforcement. Many students don’t know what they’re truly capable of. With practice you can reach your goals.
4. What is your favorite music to play and listen to?
I really enjoying playing funk on drums and classical on piano. The syncopation, groove, and complexity of funk music is unlike any other genre.
5. What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I produce music. Just for myself, no releases, no deadlines. It truly makes me happy.
6. What are some fun facts that people might not know about you?
I have had songs played on Sirius XM radio, worked with and released on major labels, traveled the world to make and perform music, and obtained millions of plays worldwide via the internet. I eat, sleep, and breathe music!
