It’s my pleasure to introduce one of Winterhalter Music’s newest teachers, Rachel McAleer! Rachel originally hails from a small town in Pennsylvania, though most recently she lived in Indiana. Rachel is a violinist primarily, but also teaches viola, cello, bass, piano, and beginner clarinet and beginner saxophone.
In Indiana, Rachel attended the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Rachel has a very strong pedagogical background and intensive teaching experience including work with many young students from underprivileged homes. She is rather new to the DC area, but is enjoying exploring everything DC has to offer. The following interview will help you get to know her better.
1. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?
Growing up, my music teachers were so important to my development as a person. They were such wonderful role models, and I want to be the same for my students. Having a strong passion for music also made it easy for me to choose this career!
2. Describe your teaching style.
My teaching style is fun and positive, while also being structured and methodical. Learning how to play an instrument is no easy task! It is very important that we have fun along the way.
3. What do you hope your students will get out of taking lessons from you?
Self confidence, happiness, and music appreciation.
4. What is your favorite music to play and listen to?
My favorite music to play is Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok… I could go on forever. My favorite music to listen to is a bit different. I love listening to electronic, funk, and folk music.
5. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like spending time with my family, especially my cute nephews. In the winter time, I snowboard and cross country ski as much as possible. Having since moved to DC, I spend much of my free time exploring museums, parks, and restaurants.

My son has been studying with Rachel for one year. He has improved tremendously! Rachel is exactly how she describes herself in this blog- structured and methodical, but also sweet and fun! She is always patient and encouraging. She takes an interest in my son and shows that she cares about him. We are thrilled to have found her as a teacher!
