Today I’d like to introduce you to Rodney Long! Rodney teaches piano and voice with Winterhalter Music. When I hired him in the fall of 2011, he was brand new to the DC area, enjoying everything our area has to offer. Now, in addition to teaching with Winterhalter Music, Rodney also works full-time in the Montgomery County Public Schools teaching high school chorus among other classes.
Rodney’s musical experience and background is superb! He’s played piano since a young age and studied voice since high school. He attended Columbus State University on a very substantial vocal scholarship, receiving degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance. He’s received numerous awards and was even cast in a production of the Atlanta Opera’s “Porgy and Bess” while he was still in college. Last year he was offered, but turned down, an opportunity to sing as a performer in China. Wow!
The following is my interview with Rodney:
1. Why did you decide to become a music teacher?
Music is my passion, and nothing feels greater than for me to share my passion with others.
2. What is your favorite thing about teaching?
My favorite thing about teaching is watching students grow as musicians and getting excited when they discover that they have accomplished something musical.
3. How do you motivate your students?
This is something that I truly tailor to each student. What motivates one doesn’t motivate the other. I strive to get to know my students’ personalities and what motivates them. Although I have found that, in general, nothing motivates my students more to learn music than allowing them to play music they love, and for them to feel that they can succeed. I set it up where my students are challenged but always feel a sense of success.
4. What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy long walks on the beach, gazing at the stars, rainy days……etc., when time permits. I can typically be found helping little old ladies across the street, and saving frightened kitties from trees. Other than that I enjoy hanging out, shopping, discovering new eateries, baking, traveling and speaking Spanish.
5. What are some fun facts that people might not know about you?
I am from GA, and I moved to the DC area for no other reason than I simply wanted to live somewhere new! I am a chocoholic and I love to bake — cakes, pies, cookies — you name it! I have one older brother who is nothing like me. My family is large: My mother has 9 siblings, and my dad has 13. I am the youngest grandchild to my grandparents on both sides of the family. I’m not spoiled at all. I had perfect attendance all throughout grades k-12 (That went out the window in college.) I almost ALWAYS win at limbo competitions at parties and social events!
